Writers Association Meeting and Open House

Reverend Maria Dancing Heart Hoaglund, author of The Last Adventure of Life: Sacred Resources for Living and Dying from a Hospice Counselor, will be the speaker.
Now in its second edition, Dancing Heart’s work provides the reader with useful inspiration and rich resources for coping with life, death, grief and change of every kind. She has made it her mission to dispel the modern world’s superstition and fear of the ultimate transition.
Writers are invited to bring their published works to participate in Tell and Sell, a mini book fair that is a standard part of the monthly meeting. Featured speaker will be Yseldah Applegate, who is a registered nurse with 38 years experience. She is, also, a retired Commander Navy Nurse with 23 years experience including war-time and trauma nursing. Mrs. Applegate’s focus will be on her work with Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief in November 2005, with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Headquarters in Gulfport, MS. days #79 - #94 of the disaster. Whidbey Weavers Guild Meeting

This month’s program, with Barbara Zander, is I Want That Hummingbird Look or How To Weave Iridescence. Have you ever looked at the oil and water on the street and admired the way the colors change, or looked at the hummingbird at your feeder and watched him change from green to red? Who hasn’t wanted to weave cloth with those same fascinating shifts? There are five components to successfully weaving iridescent cloth. These will be explored as well as some information on weaving with fine threads will be presented. Barbara Zander has been weaving and dyeing for over 25 years. In her current work she is exploring texture created through color and venturing into the 3-D realm.
Genealogical Society Meeting

The Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island hosts Sarah Thorson Little, who will present a program, “Case Study in Research Methodology” to members and visitors. Ms. Little has been a professional genealogist for thirty years, and since 1989 has been the lead instructor in the University of Washington Certificate Program in Genealogy. She is also an instructor in Family History and Computer Research at North and South Seattle Community Colleges. Ms. Little has specialized research expertise in Northwest Native Americans, Scandinavian, and 19th and 20th Century U.S. and Washington state research. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and has performed research throughout the U.S. and Europe. She is one of our most popular speakers.
Education classes are held at 12:00PM. This month the Beginning Class will cover Oral Histories, and the Intermediate Class topic is “Timelines Can Help.” The field trip is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, to the Western Washington State Archibes in Bellingham. Artists of South Whidbey June Meeting

During the Artists of South Whidbey (ASW) June meeting members will finalize plans for the ASW Show to be held this year on June 27, 28 and 29 at the Island County Fairground. The show will feature original art work as well as printed cards by ASW members. Artist are reminded to bring their finished co-op pieces for the silent auction which will be sold at the show to help fund the ASW Art Scholarship. This award is presented annually to a Whidbey Island high school senior pursuing higher education in the field of visual arts.
There will also be time allotted, before and during the meeting, for critiquing works in progress.
ASW welcomes artists of all levels and media to join their meetings. Meetings begin with a sack lunch at 11:30AM for informal discussions, a business meeting at 12:00PM, and the artistic discussion will begin at 12:30PM.
